Recap- II. The day of the Roses!

Recap- II. The day of the Roses!

I was never the romantic type. Not an ardent music follower, not a great singer or dancer, not good with any musical instrument. I aint particularly proud of me not being so, its just that all my efforts to horn such skills have been a solid setback. I was never an indoor guy, hence all my interests are towards the high adrenaline endeavors like sports. This has actually taken a toll at the cultured being in me. So you see I am not the ideal romantic kind of a guy a girl might prefer.

Having said so, this dosen’t mean that I haven’t had luck in love. I would say that I was one of those fortunate ones who have struck gold in that field at quite an early age and never having to search for it a second time….and we have been seeing each other for the past six years…..yeah six years and sailing smooth and strong…aint that quite something.

We hitched up in the first sem in college. I have no clue as to how she could stand me, and she still can suffer a bloke like me. By the 2nd year she had come to terms with the simple fact that she would not be privy to the usual share of time that a girl could rightly expect from her boyfriend becoz either I am running after some or the other tournament or a Fest or I am out playing or practicing, something or the other always tended to keep me busy.

In fact by 4th year I had wisened up(a bit). I started realizing how bad she must be feeling seeing other girls all the time with their guys and all. I thought I needed to do something to cheer her up.… I realized that the best gift that can be given to any person is a joyful surprise. I thought I would do something quite …well quite not me!

So one Sunday the romantic in me was all charged up. On our 20-minute trip to the college in our Dauda Express (our college bus) I happened to notice a florists place and I made an emergency exit. I rummaged through his stock and selected a lovely bunch of roses and off I scrammed to HNLU. As I neared the gate it struck me….hell it was not a day of any occasion , not any anniversary or any kinda Hallmark manufactured Day! And I was notorious in college for my disbelief in all systematized or structured practices. I would be in for quite a treatment from the guys if they see me walking in like that. I just hid ‘em flowers inside my tee shirt and kept it pressed against my spine. That moron of a florist had not plucked out all the thorns properly and this was pricking me so badly that I was twitching with every step.

She was waiting in the corridor as always to see whether I make it in the morning. I don’t know why, but she always gets all chirpy and gleeful whenever she sees me in the mornings, it actually sweeps me off and on every such mornings I promise myself that I would devote more time to her, could never keep that promise though (it’s one of those things I’ve repented since passing out from HNLU).

I quietly slipped the roses into her locker while she was standing in line for breakfast in our legendary mess. She was quite happy that I had turned up so early in college, becoz I usually don’t grace with my presence until 1:00 in the afternoon just in time for the post lunch session.

After the mess ordeal we went back to get her comp from the locker……and boy did she have a shock or what? I almost felt that she had a stroke, she couldn’t believe that I had come up with all this for no particular reason and that I … I had come up with it. Her eyes had all brightened up and I was ready to drown myself in them…it was such a beautiful moment that thinking about it makes me quite happy…that was the day I made a very important decision for my life ahead…that was the day of The Roses!

Recap-I The Fests

Recap- I. The Fests and the Blue Devils!

If someone were to ask me which were the most fun filled days of my college life, I would definitely tell them that those were the days of the Fests.

In my college, moots were the way of life (moot courts are case simulations something similar to mock trials without all the usual drama),.. until along came the fests and the Blue Devils.

All who had a life beyond the books and moots, who liked to freak out once in a while, who were good at things other mugging up, the ones who had a spirit for the field and the stage were all obsessed with the Fests.

Sports and cultural fests like Spiritus, Invicta, Legala, Outlawed… there were so many of 'em. These are usually three days of intoxicating atmosphere, raging games on the field, fiery bands on the stage, boozing and chasing…! Ohh! That was heaven! Solid fun!

"Sports and culture events are a part of learning and making of a person" this is very common understanding among the learned people of the civilized world but unfortunately there were few such people who were running HNLU. We ended up fighting with the college admin for roundabout 3 months for a 3 day fest.

Actually the long struggle was a result of our oversight. We should have figured out that the only problem with the admin in letting us go was the funding part. Too many questions were been raised- Wont too many class hours be missed?, how would the students make up?(yeah right!), What about the safety of those who go? (like anyone gave a shit- its not likely that 25 guys maybe sexually assaulted in the train or something), What about proper coaching and practice?... One fine day two of us went to the VC and told him “We don’t need funds, just attendance makeup of five days for going to the fest.” BINGO! The questions disappeared, apprehensions evaporated and permission for 25 guys (they still didn’t allow girls to go... security concerns were cited… I don’t blame them.) comprising primarily of the Soccer, Volleyball and the Indoor games teams were granted from above.

By the way Spiritus is the annual Sports fest organized for law colleges throughout the country and hosted by NLS Bangalore. It’s a really good fest with real neat arrangements for the visiting teams. The stay, the feel, the match timings are all commendable.

Sid who was the Sports committee convener gave me and my friends a free hand in selecting the teams and we put together the best pack of hooligans one could muster in HNLU.

We were debutants and hence minnows in every sport... Our main game was football and by the end of the first day we ensured that everyone knew us.

Having quite a few hardcore Chelsea and ManU fans in the team we chose to fondly call ourself the Blue Devils- homage to both clubs so that none would feel left out. Since we were not exactly a democratic setup the minority voices of other allegiances were quickly silenced. Having Gasper and Dan as ardent Chelsea fans made getting everyone to accept Blue to be our team colour was relatively simple enough.

We smashed The Tamil Nadu team by a thorough 3-0 score line without allowing the opposition even a shot at the goal. We went into day 2 a bit scared since we were playing Bombay and we heard that apparently they were good. It was an ambush! In the second minute a screamer by Gasper our striker left the crossbar rattling for about 5-6 seconds. I don’t think anyone on the field would have witnessed such brute power being lashed around before. The rest of the game was a song, we stormed into the semi-final ending the game 3-0 yet again which also included our winger Ajay badly injured with a torn ligament from a thrashing blow to the knee (The injury was unfortunately permanent and he has never played any sport ever since that injury, he was also one of star prospect in Badminton- Ajay Singh Rajput, one of the best sportsmen I have encountered, Salute!).

Day 3 was a disaster; we were knocked out in the semi finals of Soccer, Volleyball and Badminton.

Symbi knocked us… ahem… beat the shit out of us in football. Vicky and his team let us see very little of the ball except for the three times we picked it out of our own net, That’s when we realized that playing without practice can get you only so far.

Symbi yet again knocked us out of volleyball and GLC Mumbai knocked us out in Badminton.

That was the day I hated my college for not providing any infrastructural support to train but was so proud of the side I had captained for five years. Without a proper football field (we had not moved into our permanent campus, which by the way is one of the biggest and most expensive law campuses in India), without any coaching or any sort of practice my boys had thundered into the semis of the Soccer tournament.

We just drank till we were out of our senses and the next day we were as glee and joyful as ever and wondering- “Semifinalists on début, not bad huh?”

We didn’t wanna go back, partly because we were overwhelmed by the atmosphere there and partly because we would have to wait for the next fest to have some fun.

We were regulars at all the fests later on and finally people higher us sat up and realized that perhaps inter college activities other than moots are also a part of education.

Hell we miss thosse days, the days of the fests.

Taught to hate!

I had to say this somewhere and my blog seemed to me to be the best option. I want to talk about how much hate is been injected to all our minds. Its about how people are been taught to hate right from their childhood. The impact being so great that the mind is so rigidly moulded, any amount of sound logic wouldn't be suffice to bring em back to neutral.

We are taught to hate people of other religions, castes, races and classes. Taught to hate people who are different from us. Even after being exposed to a mixed cultural environment like the one in our college, people are still stereotyped the way they always are. Indian culture is such that we always search fo oppurtunities to hate others its as if its in our blood.

Ours is a country which cannot afford to sustain this kinda tendencies because we have a very explosive mix of religions, races and castes.

Bullshit....

I am drafting this post sitting inside the classroom & I'm going crazy by the minute. Occassionally my professor in an attempt to keep the class alive is posing questions at the students, at least to the ones who are still awake, for which i am regularly supplying a helpless smile. I can hear music & with half the class asleep i don't have a clue as to where its coming from. The ones who are still awake simply sit and stare as if they are doped.
No one gives a damn anymore to what's going on or who's teaching. All they wanna do is to go to as much Moots Courts as possible, bunk as much classes as possible, study as least as possible, eat as much as posible and sleep as much as possible. Who teaches and whats been taught and all such things are been considered quite mundane and earthly matters to be pursued. Ask anyone about whats going on , you will get the same reply-" Arey Moot Court main busy hoon yaar!!!! " Its as if their world stars and ends in moots.
Well i guess thats enough crap for one afternoon. The bell has gone and it has woken up most of my classmates who are stirring up for getting themself marked present.

Lousy Beggars!

I am not here to discuss about the common social phenomenon or human resource development or economics. Here i intend to talk about some unscrupulous characters who have changed the meaning of "hardwork pays".
There are a few, if not many, shameless, ridiculous, obnoxious entities in my class who make their way to the top ranks after a frivolous round of third rate boot-licking and shameless begging. The stimulus for the boot-licking is the presence of anyone who has scored more marks than the begging and boot-licking experts.
The funny thing is that evryone in the class knows that such people manage to stay in the top ranks only because of favouritism and their skill in begging, yet none raiseth a word! They prefer to remain as passive observers allowing unworthy and unscrupulous numbskulls to make their way to the top.
Not any more-
Recently the begging and boot-licking has recieved a tremendous setback: First Mr. Divya Tyagi and then Prof. Dixit, both have taken a strong stand against increasing of marks and have refused to entertain any requests however nice and buttery they may be. The veteren beggars had approached Tyagi in the class itself, but what they got was a polite "NO", and had to be contended with an insulted smirk. Prof. Dixit was on the other hand on the attacking mood and before distributing the answer sheets had declared that there shall be no change whatsoever in the marks. Hurrah to Tyagi Sir and Dixit Sir.
At last after two and a half years of functioning of this university the faculty has come to realise the extend of damage that is done to the whole system by these lousy beggars. Praise the Lord!

Sports Ahoy!

It's festive time in HNLU as the much awaited Sports tournament has comenced.(Its about time too!)

As per schedule there was supposed to be four matches on 25/09/2005. Two of cricket and two of soccer. In cricket 4th sem was pitted against 3rd and the 5th was against the 1st. Both the matches turned out to be closely fought with the thrill lasting till the last ball.
Cricket
Match I (3rd Sem v. 4th Sem)
After a superb spell from Rahul which included a hat-trick and a harvest of 4 wickets saw the 4th sem been rounded off for 68. Every on ewas expecting a one sided match but then 4th sem kept up their reputation and gave a magnificient fight-back which made the match to be decided by the second last ball when the winning 69th run for the 3rd sem came through Chaitanya's sqare cut. The 3rd sem won the first match with one wicket in hand.
Match II (1st Sem v. 5th Sem)
The 5th sem went on to bat first after winning the toss and made a comfortable total of 107 runs. Main contribution to the score came from Vedant, Harsh and Vishesh. The pressure of the chase led to the fall of some early wickets but the combined firepower exhibited by Debajyoti, Arjun and Prathyum steered the 1st sem to a victory with two wickets in hand.
Soccer
The players were all ready and the mood was in for another adrenaline filled round of football. But it so happened that at the scheduled time of the match every able bodied youngster in Raipur who could get hold of a cricket bat was playing in the ground which was booked for HNLU. Alas! The football lovers were last seen yesterday taking turns in kicking the ball at the lights that adorn the HNLU gate!
